What are the symptoms?
When a man indulges in sexual intercourse due to the sensation sent to the brain, he first becomes sexually aroused. Subsequently the brain sends signals to the nerves causing increased blood flow to the penis. The blood normally fills the sac or cavities inside the penis causing erection. This is sustained by the person until he ejaculates.
In some cases the man may not be able to sustain or keep firm the erection of penis. This is the main symptom of erectile dysfunction. This becomes a regular issue and he will not be able to sustain the erection. There are several factors which are responsible for erectile dysfunction.
Some persons would get erection during sleep since the mind is not functioning and hence the underlying psychological causes are lowered. In those cases it can be settled through counselor who rationalizes his behavior and eliminates the underlying psychological fear which causes erectile dysfunction. It is also evident that the person’s physical condition is good and healthy since he gets erection when he is asleep. This could easily be settled in 4 or 5 sessions of counseling. No medications are necessary for this type of symptoms.
Decrease in libido or sexual drive is considered as sign of erectile dysfunction. When an individual repeatedly fails in his attempt to maintain erection he would lose any interest in sex or pleasure derived from sex, gradually. This is due to the pressure that is built up in his mind about his poor performance. He would be scared to attempt any more time and further his self-esteem would go down. He would feel worthless and due to self sympathy he may later develop anxiety or depression. In such cases, it is necessary for the spouse to understand his weakness and take him to the doctor for getting treated.
Time for consulting a doctor
If a man has trouble in sustaining his erection for more than 2-3 months of repeated trials, it is time to visit the doctor immediately. Many men would not prefer to go to the doctor due to the feeling of shame and guilt. It is true that sometimes the disorder gets cured on its own if the underlying cause is psychological issue. The partner should understand the man and be supportive in his attempts. The doctor would also give tips for trying several methods of sex. Unless a man completely engages his mind in sexual activity he cannot sustain erection. To rule out any physical anomaly it is necessary to consult the doctor if he has erectile dysfunction.
